In this recent episode of the Unchained podcast, Laura Shin interviews Representative Ro Khanna, a Democrat who has been a supporter of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. According to Khanna, the Democratic Party has not been very supportive of crypto in the past, but he believes that is changing. He mentions that nearly 70 Democrats voted for the Veterans’ Crypto Law (Fit21) and that he is working with Patrick McHenry to regulate the crypto industry in a more balanced way.

Khanna thinks that the Democratic Party is inclined to listen to the “next generation” of Democrats who are more open to crypto. He cites examples of Democratic politicians, including himself, who have taken a more favorable stance towards crypto, such as voting to overturn the Biden administration’s veto of Sab121. He believes that the Democratic Party will reject its hostile past policies and embrace crypto at the upcoming convention.

In terms of specifics, Khanna wants to see clear guidelines for banks to hold crypto assets, fair treatment for crypto companies, and the SEC and CFTC to work together more effectively. He also thinks that Bitcoin should be explored as a reserve asset for the Federal Reserve.

Khanna is set to speak at the Bitcoin conference and will be pushing for a Democratic crypto platform that includes fair banking, clear rules, and a clear delineation of the rules between the SEC and CFTC. He says that he has concerns about Christy Goldsmith Romero’s nomination to head the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and thinks that she would need to clarify her stance on crypto to avoid discriminatory practices.

On the topic of token issuance, Khanna thinks that the crypto community needs regulatory clarity, which he hopes Fit21 will provide. He believes that this will allow for more innovation in the industry and enable new tokens to be issued.
