On Monday, two Madison area health care players released a new report that proposes a series of guidelines meant to steer the rollout out of artificial intelligence tools in the health care space.
UW Health in Madison and Verona based Epic Systems led a roundtable discussion in early June on which the report was based.
The discussion included health care provider executives, staff from congressional offices, and academics. Four hours of brainstorming in Washington D.C. led to Monday’s release of a nine-page document titled “Final Report of the Roundtable on Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare.”

UW-Health and Epic Systems Reveal AI in Health Care Guidelines
A recent report by W Health and Epic Systems has outlined guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. The report, the result of a June roundtable in Washington D.C., brought together hospital administrators, academics, and Congressional leaders to discuss the potential impact of AI on the industry. The goal is to establish clear guidelines for the use of AI in healthcare, as it begins to transform the way patients interact with doctors and hospitals.
At UW Health, AI is already being used to free up more time for doctors to see patients. For example, AI-powered chatbots are being used to draft responses to patient messages, which are then reviewed by human healthcare professionals. This allows doctors to focus on more complex and personal attention. Additionally, voice recognition technology is being used to help doctors take notes, reducing distractions and allowing for more direct patient interaction.
The report highlights the need for careful consideration in deploying AI, particularly in administrative roles, to avoid potential errors. Despite concerns, AI is being used in a range of applications, including patient communication, diagnostics, and treatment planning.
The cost impact of AI on healthcare is an area of significant uncertainty, but experts are making educated guesses about its potential effects. As AI continues to revolutionize the healthcare industry, adopters are working to establish guidelines and best practices to ensure safe and effective implementation.
In summary, AI is transforming the way healthcare is delivered and managed, from patient communication to treatment planning. While there are concerns about the potential impact on costs, experts are working together to establish guidelines for responsible use, ensuring that AI benefits both patients and healthcare providers.
