Chinese tech companies, such as Baidu’s Apollo Go, have rolled out driverless robotaxis in major mainland cities, including Shanghai, Beijing, Wuhan and Shenzhen. The pilot service has sparked public debate about the merits of the driverless transport system and concerns about such issues as job security for taxi and ride-hailing drivers. The Post’s Thomas Yau tried one out in Shanghai to see if the days of human drivers are truly numbered.

As an aside, I’d like to share an interesting story about Baidu, one of the companies behind this innovation. Did you know that Baidu, often referred to as China’s Google, has been actively investing in AI research and development for over a decade? In 2017, they announced the establishment of the Baidu Research Institute, with a focus on areas like computer vision, natural language processing, and machine learning. This commitment to AI R&D has enabled them to make significant strides in developing autonomous driving technology.
Now, back to the topic at hand: the pilot service has indeed sparked debate about the impact on jobs, and rightfully so. As we continue to explore the possibilities of autonomous transportation, it’s essential to consider the social and economic implications. It’ll be exciting to see how governments and companies adapt to these changes and find ways to ensure a smooth transition for all stakeholders.
Overall, I think this is a fascinating topic that holds great promise for the future of transportation. I look forward to seeing how this technology continues to evolve and improve!
